Haralabos Voulgaris spent years looking for the games where the lines were wrong, and became one of the most prolific NBA bettors in the world. The documentary below tells how.

Who he is

Voulgaris is a Greek-Canadian professional gambler, born July 4, 1975. Beyond basketball, he has cashed more than $3 million in live poker tournaments, including a fourth-place finish at the 2017 WSOP One Drop event worth $1,158,883.

The edge

As the documentary and other coverage tell it, his edge came from numbers, not hunches. One commonly told example: oddsmakers split a game’s projected total points evenly between the two halves, even though NBA games tend to see more scoring late. Reports also say he partnered with a mathematician to build a predictive model he called Ewing, and that he bet more than $1 million on a single day of games at his peak. Those figures come from retellings, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed.

From bettor to front office

In October 2018 the Dallas Mavericks hired Voulgaris as their Director of Quantitative Research and Development. He left in June 2021, amid reports of conflicts in the front office.

Did he really break Vegas?

Not in the literal sense. The books adapted, as they always do. What Voulgaris proved was that a disciplined, data-driven approach could find value in a market most people treated as a coin flip. That’s the real story: not luck, but an edge, and how long an edge lasts once everyone sees it.

Sources

Haralabos Voulgaris, Wikipedia

Haralabos Voulgaris: The Gambler Who Outsmarted Vegas, Open Court

The Man Who Broke NBA Sports Betting and Beat Vegas, video (TILT)

[74
["post-35415","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-gambling
["GET
