Aaron Rodgers: Betting on His NFL Future

Suspected to happen since late in the 2024 regular season, reports over Super Bowl weekend confirmed that quarterback Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets are parting ways this offseason.

Does that mean he will retire? Not necessarily. He’s 41-years-old, but as bad as the Jets were last season, Rodgers was pretty good. He ranked eighth in passing yards, eighth in touchdown passes, and he held up physically, starting all 17 games.

But he’s going to turn 42 during 2025, and while his cap hit next season is only $23.5 million, the Jets would owe him a $35 million bonus by Week 1 of the regular season. As a franchise once again in reset mode, the team is moving on.

As for Rodgers’ future — on the question of whether he will retire before the 2025 season begins, “Yes” is the betting favorite at -150. But “No,” meaning that Rodgers will be back for another season, is only a modest underdog at +110.

Next Team Odds for Aaron Rodgers

Pittsburgh Steelers (+100)

Both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson may be moving on from the Pittsburgh Steelers, and Aaron Rodgers could be dropped right in and instantly make this offense better. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith prefers a run-first, tight-end-heavy attack, and someone with Rodgers’ experience and decision-making would be a good fit.

Head coach Mike Tomlin is also the kind of leader that would command respect from Rodgers.

San Francisco 49ers (+300)

The San Francisco 49ers still have to answer the question on what they are going to do with quarterback Brock Purdy, and Rodgers is from Chico, California, which is just 200 miles north of Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

He was hoping to be drafted by the Niners in 2005 and become their starting quarterback, and now, 20 years later, he may still get that chance.

New Orleans Saints (+500)

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore is expected to take the new head coaching job in New Orleans, and incumbent quarterback Derek Carr comes with a potential out for the team when the new league year begins in 2025.

Carr missed seven games this past season with multiple injuries, including a fractured hand suffered in Week 14. But when healthy, he was having his best season with the Saints.

Las Vegas Raiders (+700)

Now that Tom Brady is done broadcasting for the year, he can go about the task of building a roster in Las Vegas. Nothing is more important than getting a competent quarterback, and while Rodgers wouldn’t be a long-term solution for any team at this point, he’d make a good bridge quarterback for the Raiders.

Las Vegas has the sixth pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and are expected to try and get a quarterback, with or without Rodgers on the roster.

Cleveland Browns (+1000)

It’s becoming clearer by the week that Deshaun Watson is done with the Cleveland Browns. It’s one of the worst — if not the worst — trades in NFL history, and Browns ownership wants nothing more than to do something to make the fans forget about these very unforgettable three seasons. Watson played a total of 19 games in three seasons in Cleveland, winning just nine of them.

As controversial as Rodgers can be at times, he would be a breath of fresh air in Cleveland.

Seattle Seahawks (+1000)

The Seattle Seahawks have been competitive in every season Geno Smith has been their starter, and in 2024, he threw for more than 4,000 yards for the second time in his career. But he did throw 15 interceptions this season, and Seattle failed to make the playoffs.

Rodgers isn’t an obvious fit in Seattle, but maybe the team is ready for a change.

New York Giants (+1200)

The New York Giants share a stadium with the Jets, perhaps they can share Rodgers. The Giants do need a quarterback in the worst way, and they do not want to waste any more years of having wide receiver Malik Nabers under a cheap rookie contract.

Tennessee Titans (+1400)

The Tennessee Titans own the first pick of the draft, so if there is a rookie quarterback that they want, they’ll get him. That makes Rodgers a longshot to end up in Tennessee. But the Titans could always trade out of the No. 1 pick, fill lots of holes, and then add a veteran quarterback for a year.
