The Sweat's View
A 96% market reflects a large polling lead in a state that heavily favors his party, and nothing in the polling we found contradicts it. The main uncertainty is not Becerra's support but how recent the evidence is: the poll behind most coverage was taken in early August. Treat the number as the market's read on a lopsided race, and look for newer polling as November approaches.

The Case For
- Xavier Becerra led Steve Hilton 55% to 37% in a UC Berkeley IGS poll of likely voters taken August 3 to 9, with 7% undecided. LAist / KQED
- The state leans his way. Democrats outnumber Republicans in California by nearly 2 to 1, and Kamala Harris won the state by 20 points in 2024. LAist / KQED
- Hilton's image with independents is underwater in the same poll: 31% favorable and 59% unfavorable. LAist / KQED
The Case Against
- The race is a traditional partisan matchup. In the poll 88% of Democrats back Becerra and 91% of Republicans back Hilton, so the result depends on who turns out. LAist / KQED
- The poll is two months old. It was taken August 3 to 9 and 7% of likely voters were undecided. LAist / KQED
What to Watch
- Election Day November 2, 2026 The general election pits Becerra, a Democrat, against Hilton, a Republican, after the June 2 top-two primary. Source
- New public polling The most recent poll we found is from August. A fresh Berkeley IGS or other public poll would show whether the lead has held.
